Origin of AIZEN / Historique de l’AIZEN

The AIZEN is a learned society founded with a pluri-faceted purpose: to discover, to revive past and lost interests; to encourage, promote, challenge and expand the study of Émile Zola and Naturalism; and to facilitate communication between doctoral candidates, beginning researchers, international specialists, independent scholars and all other interested individuals.

The AIZEN is thirty three years old and has widened its scope as a result of increasing interest in Zola studies around the world. It provides a forum for the discussion of various topics related to Zola and Naturalism; the influence of Naturalism and naturalist writers; historical, political, socioeconomic, and scientific notions and theories; artistic events in various countries during the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth century. International conferences are held on a regular basis, where the participants debate the results of their research, take inventory of the intellectual domain, and set new objectives.

In 1991, at the end of the First International AIZEN Conference, held in Boston College, Colette Becker and Alain Pagès, renowned French specialists in the areas of Zola and Naturalism, endorsed our undertaking. Since then, many well-known specialists, young researchers, and doctoral candidates have joined our association, enabling it to expand insights into literary, cinematographic and comparative studies, as well as the fine arts, through pluri- and inter- disciplinary approaches. This endeavor is unique, since a part of the territory to be explored has not been easily accessible to Europeans. In addition, lesser-known researchers and doctoral candidates have been invited to come forward to submit papers for the international AIZEN conferences and the journal sponsored by our association, Excavatio. Our project is unique in its emphasis on the way North Americans view criticism, which Alain Pagès qualified as ...

It is our lot to excavate the Zolian and naturalist ground as archaeologists in order to rediscover forgotten works, lost paths, and voices neglected by the critics.
